Full circle for Ollie Morgan as he makes it a Commonwealth Games hat-trick

The Bishop’s Castle swimmer has won silver in the 50m and 200m backstroke events in Glasgow.

Ollie Morgan cherished a full-circle moment after winning his third silver medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The Bishop’s Castle swimming star, 23, followed up his 50m backstroke and 4x100m freestyle relay gongs with the same colour medal in Sunday night’s 200m event.

Morgan finished second behind South African favourite Pieter Coetze as English team-mate Luke Greenbank bagged bronze.

The Shropshire star has fond memories of watching the Birmingham Games as a fresh-faced 19-year-old four years ago.

And he revelled in his whirlwind journey after climbing onto the podium for the third time here in Glasgow.

“Four years ago I was watching in Birmingham as a fan, so the journey that I’ve been on in the last four years has been really quite special,” he said.

“My family are all here from Shropshire, so it’s been an amazing experience.

“It’s the closest we can get to a home Games – looking up and seeing so many England flags and fans, seeing my family in the crowd is really quite special.

“I haven’t competed here since my first nationals in 2019 as a 16-year-old, so it’s quite the turnaround moment.”

Morgan, who earned his 4x100m freestyle relay medal by swimming for England in the heats, is one of 251 Team England athletes here in Glasgow, all of whom benefit from crucial National Lottery funding.

He has a chance for more silverware when he starts Tuesday’s 100m backstroke event – with the final on Wednesday – and is hoping to turn silver into gold.

“I’m really happy with that,” he said. “It’s a quality field so to come away with a silver gives me great confidence for the 100m.

“Coming in I hadn’t won a long course international medal – so three races and three silvers, hopefully we can turn them to gold in the relays and 100m later in the week.”

Thanks to National Lottery players, more than £33million is raised every week for good causes. It’s because of you sport, arts, heritage and community projects, as well as our athletes competing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, are supported across the UK
