Wolves teenager Mateus Mane left stunned after joining Cristiano Ronaldo in unique Premier League record

Wolves youngster Mateus Mane has reacted after his latest goal saw him equal a record set by Cristiano Ronaldo.

Wolves starlet Mateus Mane admitted it was “amazing” to equal a record set by his boyhood hero Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 18-year-old’s brilliant strike to put Wolves ahead against Fulham last weekend etched his name into the history books alongside the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Mane became only the second Portuguese teenager to score three or more goals from outside the box in a single Premier League season, after Ronaldo in 2003/04 - with both players reaching three.

Reacting to the milestone, Mane said: “It feels good to be named alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. It’s amazing.

“I will be telling everybody about that now.”

Asked if Ronaldo was someone he looked up to growing up, the Portugal Under-21 international added: “Definitely. He is someone I watched as a kid, as well as Neymar, I liked his mentality, it is fantastic.”

Mane put Rob Edwards’ side ahead against Fulham midway through the first half, thundering home a powerful right-footed effort from the edge of the box beyond the reach of Bernd Leno.

It was Mane’s third Premier League goal of the season and his first in the league since scoring against Everton in January, sealing his place alongside Ronaldo in the record books.

With it Wolves’ final outing at Molineux this season and their penultimate game in the Premier League before dropping to the Championship, Mane’s family were in the stands watching on.

He revealed that he had told them before kick-off that he would get on the scoresheet - and that wish came true as he powered home before wheeling away in celebration.

The teenager said: “I have tried scoring for the last few games, and today it worked out. As soon as the ball left my feet I knew it was going in the back of the net, so I was happy with that.

“Before the game I told my family that I would score for them and it worked out, so they are really happy and celebrating.”
