"We gave ourselves a platform" - Rob Edwards reacts to Wolves' draw with Fulham
The side’s played out a 1-1 draw at Molineux.
Rob Edwards was pleased his Wolves side gave themselves a ‘platform’ for success, despite frustration at only earning a point against Fulham.
Mateus Mane was involved in the game’s two big incidents with a first half goal, before giving away a penalty for the visitors’ equaliser.
After conceding within just 35 seconds last time out against Brighton, Edwards was pleased his side did the basics well, but was disappointed they could not force a second half winner.
“I’m more happy with the start,” the head coach said.
“It was my biggest frustration last week and we gave ourselves a platform today.
“We made better decisions, didn't put ourselves in too much trouble, played forward when we needed to, did the basics better.
“We earned our lead, which was great.
“I think once we got that, I'd love us to capitalise on it more and then still continue to try and press and push forward.
“I think we went a little bit back and tried to protect it for the last 10-15 minutes of that first half, which frustrated us a little bit and I think that led to the pressure and to the penalty.
“But I thought we got back on it second half and there were loads of high regains, especially mid-third regains, where we looked threatening.
“There were some big moments, none bigger than Yerson’s header from the set-piece, Armstrong hit the post and there were a lot of other good moments as well where we could be better, but we looked a threat.
“I was really pleased with the second half.”
It was Wolves’ final home game of an awful campaign that has already resulted in relegation to the Championship.
Some fans booed at full-time, while others also booed Edwards as he approached the South Bank to clap the supporters after the game.
The head coach has admitted it’s a ‘horrible’ situation for the club trying to navigate the final games of the season, but he has quickly defended his home record in charge of the club.
“I'm pleased it went relatively well,” Edwards said.
“The situation is horrible because of the season as a whole. But if you actually look at our results from Christmas at home, I think of the 10 games, I think there's three wins, four draws and three defeats.
“It's not horrendous. We've actually been all right here at home, even in quite challenging circumstances playing here.
“Clearly, away from home has been a problem and there's lots of other ones as well.
“But the way the day went, I thought the performance was good.
“There was a change in what we did, a number of things that we looked at and I think there were some good things there.
“I'm just disappointed that we weren't able to find that goal that would have won us the game.”
Wolves face 19th-placed Burnley next weekend in the final match of the campaign, with a chance to leapfrog them if they lose to Arsenal on Monday night.
