West Brom graduate set to depart for league rivals Stoke after 15 years at club

Albion academy graduate is closing in on a move to Championship rivals

Albion goalkeeper Josh Griffiths is closing in on a move to Championship rivals Stoke City.

The academy graduate is set to bring an end to an association of almost 15 years with the Baggies as boss James Morrison continues a goalkeeping reshuffle.

Griffiths, who turns 25 in September, has been courted by Stoke this summer as the Potters look for cover and competition for star No.1 Viktor Johansson, who is at the World Cup with Sweden.

Albion sealed a new three-year contract for January arrival Max O'Leary last month, though with Griffiths set to depart there will be more recruitment carried out between the sticks.

Potters goalkeeper coach Darren Behcet has recommended Hereford-born Griffiths as an ideal candidate for Stoke's ranks.

Griffiths has a year left on the Albion contract he signed in 2024.

The keeper was given the opportunity to begin last season as first choice between the sticks but, despite some strong performances, he was dropped by former boss Ryan Mason in December following errors.

Griffiths regained his position from Joe Wildsmith the following month but the club recruited Republic of Ireland international O'Leary having identified a need to improve the options.

Griffiths has made 45 first-team appearances at the club, and almost 200 senior outings when including loans at Cheltenham, Lincoln, Portsmouth and Bristol Rovers.

Albion, who are back in training on Thursday, also allowed Wildsmith to depart The Hawthorns on a free transfer this summer.

Youth teamers Joe Wallis, 21, and Ben Cisse, 20, are well regarded by club staff.

Stoke, under former Coventry boss Mark Robins, finished four places and four points above Albion in 17th last season.
