'Stability' - Former West Brom defender calls for continuity under James Morrison

The former defender has called for continuity at West Brom.

Former West Brom favourite Paul Robinson insists supporters must be patient with new head coach James Morrison next season.

Morrison was permanently appointed as head coach in late April, after successfully steering the Baggies to Championship safety.

A 10-game unbeaten run either side of defeats to Oxford United and Sheffield Wednesday ultimately saw them finish four points above the drop zone.

Now, his former teammate Robinson has called on the West Brom board, and its fan base, to stand by him through the good and the bad, after such a remarkable end to the previous season under his guidance.

‘I know how much it means to him’

“I’m absolutely buzzing for Mozza because I know how much it means to him,” Robinson, who played 238 times for Albion, said.

“He needs the support. He needs the guidance from the club. He needs the people behind the scenes backing him and supporting him in the right way.

“Yes, there’s going to be times where the results might not go how they want them to go, but we can’t have the situation of everyone shouting for his head.”

West Brom have started their business early with the £1.3million signing of Scottish striker Barney Stewart from Falkirk - while they are close to sealing a deal for Chelsea forward Jimmy Jay-Morgan.

19-year-old defender Carter Pinnington has also signed on a three-year deal from Liverpool, although he will initially join the club’s under-21s team.

Morrison will continue to navigate his first transfer window at the helm, after three previous interim spells.

Ryan Mason and Eric Ramsay were both sacked last season after plunging the club into relegation trouble, but Robinson wants to see continuity in the dugout after such a challenging campaign.

“I went into West Brom not so long ago to one of the dementia groups to show my support on a Wednesday,” he added.

“You read all of these social media posts with fans venting their anger, but what they’ve got to understand is this is football.

“We can’t keep asking for managers to be sacked. We’ve got to show support to them.

“You’ve got to buy the right players. They need to be the right players that want to do well for West Brom and not just jump on this money waggon.

“You want that stability where players are there for a good two or three years where you’re building a team that can compete at the highest level.”
