West Brom push for more signings after striker deal

The Baggies are busy in the first week of the transfer window.

Albion are pushing for more signings after Barney Stewart became their first recruit of the summer.

The 22-year-old striker’s arrival from Falkirk, in a deal initially worth around £1.3million, was confirmed on Wednesday.

Stewart will not be the club’s only attacking arrival with talks over a move for Chelsea’s Jimmy-Jay Morgan at an advanced stage, while the Baggies are also on the verge of signing teenage prospect Carter Pinnington from Liverpool.

The club is eager to make early inroads in the first transfer window since Bilkul Group’s 2024 takeover where the primary focus is not on reducing losses.

Albion have been in talks with Karlan Grant over a new deal, while striker Josh Maja has been offered a new contract.

Boss James Morrison is also expected to finalise his coaching staff, with negotiations taking place with Celtic over bringing Gavin Strachan to The Hawthorns.

Stewart’s signing continues a remarkable rise for a player who only made his professional debut last year.

The London-born star was spotted by Falkirk when playing as an amateur for Heriot Watt University after moving to Scotland to study sports science.

He scored 19 goals in his first full season in the professional game, including 10 in the Scottish Premiership after being recalled from a loan spell at Dunfermline.

That caught the attention of several English clubs and it is Albion who have won the race for his signature.

The fee represents a club-record sale for Falkirk, with the Scottish club claiming there is the potential for significant add-ons.

Stewart told WBA TV: “I’m so excited by the challenge of playing in the Championship.

“I’m very confident that I can score the goals here at Albion, just like I did last year for Dunfermline and Falkirk. I’m a confident person and I’ll always back myself.”
