Day Eight at Wimbledon: Straight sets win for Andy Murray and Sabine Lisicki advances
Wow, surely even the sceptics must be getting a little excited now? Another straight sets win for Brit Andy Murray means the hopes of a nation are carried even further into Wimbledon fortnight that many had dared dream writes Neil Devereux.
While at first glance it looked like the Scot was playing Kevin Pietersen, it was actually the cricketer's countryman Kevin Anderson who looked to give Murray his first proper test in SW19.
Not so, despite Anderson standing almost as tall as the Centre Court roof and thundering down serves at nearly 140mph.
Murray won 6-4 6-3 7-6 (8-6) in a match that rain interrupted in the second set, although thankfully Sir Cliff didn't need to strike up a rendition of Summer Holiday because the roof saved the day instead.
The Briton has yet to drop a set and will next face Queen's Club champion Grigor Dimitrov in the last eight. Surely it's time for a test?
Elsewhere, there seemed to more focus on the Royal box as celebrities from Sir Bruce Forsyth to Sir Alex Ferguson traipsed in and out to catch up with the action. But on court there were more seamless passages for Djokovic, who dispatched Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets, and the dangerous Stan Wawrinka, who did the same for his Usbekistani opponent.
In the women's draw, there was success for Sabine Lisicki, a three-set winner over Ana Ivanovic, but the fourth round was a step too far for Serena's conqueror Alize Cornet. Caroline Wozniacki's run is also at an end.
So what will today bring?
Former champion Maria Sharapova is one of the players with catching up to do at Wimbledon on Tuesday after Saturday and Monday's rain. Her fourth-round match with Angelique Kerber has been held over from Monday to be played on what is traditionally women's quarter-finals day. Two women's last-eight ties will take place, while Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Stanislas Wawrinka will all be in fourth-round action in the men's draw. It's gonna be a good one!
