'Shop local' in Shropshire plea ahead of Independents' Day

Campaign is aiming to draw people onto local high streets to support independent retailers
Shropshire residents are being urged to bypass the online shopping giants and visit their local high streets as part of a national campaign.
Independents' Day will be held on Saturday July 4 and is designed to champion local high streets and spotlight the impact they have on communities.
Independent businesses account for nearly two thirds of the UK's 290,000 retail outlets and the campaign receives backing from industry bodies such as the Independent Retailers Confederation, the Federation of Independent Retailers and the Association of Town & City Management.

Sally Themans runs the grassroots Love Wellington campaign which launched in 2019 and aims to promote the Shropshire town and its businesses.
She said: "Shopping local is so much more than a convenience. It is about keeping our unique communities alive, building social fabric and quite literally giving our towns like Wellington a massive shot in the arm.
"Independent retailers keep money circulating locally.
"Studies consistently prove that for every £100 spent at a local independent business, up to £68 stays directly in the community, compared with just £43 at national chains.
"Our Shropshire and Telford 'indies' source locally, hire locally and keep our market towns distinct."
