Police warning ahead of right-wing Shrewsbury rally this weekend

Police said several events are set to take place this weekend

West Mercia Police have issued advice for people visiting Shrewsbury this weekend as the force expects a “busy weekend” and a “vibrant atmosphere”.

Police are warning that Shrewsbury centre is expected to be busier than usual this weekend, as yet another right-wing rally is planned for the town.

The rally on Saturday is being organised by Raise the Flags Shrewsbury Plus, a group that has organised several marches this year. A counter-protest has also been organised.

Paul Golding, a former BNP councillor and leader of far-right party Britain First is due to speak at this weekend’s rally - a move that has been slammed by anti-racist group, Shropshire Stand Up To Racism.

Ahead of the weekend, West Mercia Police have said the town is hosting several events on Saturday and visitors are warned to expect a busy weekend.

A police spokesperson said: “Local businesses, restaurants and entertainment venues are expected to welcome large numbers of people, creating a vibrant atmosphere across the town centre.

“There will be an increased police presence throughout Saturday to ensure the town centre remains a safe and enjoyable place for everyone.”

Inspector Ingrid Tozer, who leads the Safer Neighbourhood Team in Shrewsbury, said: “Shrewsbury is a fantastic town with plenty to offer those visiting, and due to several events, we are anticipating a higher than usual footfall on Saturday.

“If you are planning on coming into the town centre, please make sure you plan ahead and allow plenty of time for your journey. There may be some temporary road closures, and we would encourage you to please follow these.”

With road closures possible, visitors are encouraged to allow extra time for their journeys, consider using public transport, follow any temporary traffic management or parking restrictions in place and keep personal belongings secure.
