Play sand sold by Asda recalled due to 'potential asbestos contamination'
Make your own sand star and heart kits sold between 2021 and 2026 have been recalled due to risk of contamination.
A play sand product sold by Asda has been recalled due to risk that it ‘may contain small quantities of asbestos.’
The Grafix Make Your Own Sand Bottle (Star and Heart) product by Grafix includes coloured sand and a plastic star or heart-shaped bottle for children to make decorative art.
However, customers have now been warned that the product, which is manufactured in China, may be contaminated and it is now being recalled.
The affected product has model number R06-0106/AS, barcode 5015934717660, and was exclusively sold at the budget-friendly supermarket between August 2021 and May 2026.

The recall was issued because the sand may be contaminated with asbestos, which can be harmful to health even in small amounts, and therefore, does not meet the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011, according to Trading Standards.
Customers are being told to stop using the toy immediately. If the sand has not been opened, it should be sealed in a heavy-duty plastic bag and stored safely away from children. If it has already been used, the area should be cleaned carefully with wet cloths while wearing gloves and a mask.
A spokesperson for Asda said in a statement on their website: “RMS International are recalling the product as at the time of shipment and supply it passed the standard PLM testing, however new SEM testing has indicated that it may contain traces of asbestos. Asbestos fibres can present a health risk if released from the product and inhaled. As customer safety is our highest priority, we are undertaking this recall as a safety measure.

“If you have purchased Sand Art Bottle, (EAN: 5015934717660), we recommend owners stop using the product immediately.
