A5 near Shrewsbury reopens after van fire following 'multi‑vehicle crash'

Emergency services were dealing with a multi-vehicle crash on the A5 near Shrewsbury on Monday morning.

The Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the A5 near Shrewsbury just before 8.30am on Monday, February 9 after reports of a collision. 

The incident, which happened on the westbound A5 between Preston Island and Junction 7, reportedly involved more than three vehicles. 

Firefighters also reported one of the vehicles, later confirmed to be a van, was on fire.

Four fire crews from Shrewsbury, Telford and Wellington were sent to the scene, along with officers from West Mercia Police and West Midlands Ambulance staff.

At 9.05am, a spokesperson from the fire service said the road had been closed and warned drivers to use alternative routes.

They added: "Crews are currently attending a multi‑vehicle incident between Preston Island and Junction 7 on the A5. Please avoid the area and use alternative routes."

Live traffic data at around 9.30am showed drivers were facing delays of around 45 minutes on the A5 a result of the incident.

At around 10.15am, the Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the road had reopened. 

A spokesperson for the service said: "Crews from Shrewsbury, Telford Central and Wellington attended an RTC involving multiple vehicles, with one van on fire. 

"The road has now re‑opened. Please drive with care."

West Mercia Police and West Midlands Ambulance have been approached for comment.
