Llandrindod Wells Town Council is the first in Powys to host a unit for disabled people in a public toilet
Llandrindod Wells has become the first town in Powys to include a special unit for disabled people in a public toilet setting.
The refurbished public toilets on Station Crescent were officially opened to the public last week after months of work.
The toilets have been fully refurbished with a new roof and town clerk Jane Johnston said the work is of an ‘exceptionally high standard’.
The layout of the block has changed to enable the inclusion of the first Changing Places Unit in Powys for those with particular medical conditions and disabilities, thanks to the inclusion of a hoist, changing bench and additional space, replacing the existing roof.
The significant upgrade has been made possible thanks to £222,000 grant funding.
Llandrindod Wells Mayor Councillor Steve Deeks-D’Silva was handed the keys to the toilets by Tom from the contractors Danfo UK Ltd, at the opening.
Councillor Deeks-D’Silva said: “We are delighted with renovation carried out by Danfo UK Ltd, they have done a wonderful job on re-designing the layout to include a Changing Places Unit.
“This was funded by a grant from Visit Wales. We are proud that we are the first town in Powys to include a Changing Places Unit in a public toilet setting.”
The toilets will be managed by Danfo UK Ltd which has employed local cleaners.
The project was planned and managed by the Town Clerk on behalf of the Council.
Town clerk Jane Johnston said: “We hope everyone will look after these toilets and be vigilant if they see any anti-social behaviour within them.
“KDM Newsagents has kindly offered to be custodian of the key for the Changing Places Unit and an appropriate notice is now displayed on the door to the unit.”
At a recent town council meeting, Jane said portaloos provided during the toilets refurbishment were vandalised and burnt out.
Meanwhile a contractor has been engaged to lay the sub base and wet pour surface to make the outdoor fitness area fully accessible at Princes Avenue Leisure Park.
Jane said planter watering works were put out to tender recently and P McKechnie has now been appointed to carry out this service for 2026.
