Expansion plans for ‘too small’ north Shropshire primary school revealed

Work is scheduled to start in February next year

Plans to expand a north Shropshire primary school have been revealed.

Leaders at Moreton Say Primary School near Market Drayton have revealed plans to expand the facility.

Documents, prepared by Shropshire Council’s Property Services Group, say the five-class school is “too small” to accommodate its current population of 120 pupils.

As well as having “undersized classrooms”, the application states that the school hall cannot accommodate all pupils at lunchtime, meaning mealtimes are “challenging”.

Documents also reveal the school has “inadequate” staff facilities with limited options for collaboration, planning and wellbeing.

The new proposal would add an extra storey to an extension built in 2004, which would create two extra classrooms and allow for alterations to be made around the school.

The application argues there are limited options available for development as the site is “very compact” any loss of playground space would be “undesirable”. Building upwards would allow the school to increase its internal space without expanding its footprint or reducing the available playground area.

If approved, the proposed building work is scheduled to begin in February 2027, with completion targeted for the summer so the expanded facilities can be ready for the start of the September 2027 school term.

The full application is available to view online on Shropshire Council’s planning portal using reference number 26/03820/FUL
