New Whitchurch camping site approved plus all the latest Shropshire Council planning applications
Dozens of planning applications have recently been validated
Plans for a camping site on the outskirts of Whitchurch have been given the green light after access concerns were addressed.
Chris Huxley’s proposal also includes a motorhome and touring caravan on land to the rear of Hotel Farm in Grindley Brook. A toilet and shower block, hard and soft landscaping, and the installation of a private sewage treatment plant are also part of the scheme.
Shropshire Council's highways team had concerns about the proposed access arrangement so the application was withdrawn.
A new proposal was then submitted with updated details in relation to the proposed access, and amended location and site plans.
This includes a low-level fence being installed at the end of the site to deter campers from walking onto the bank of the canal, as suggested by the Canal & River Trust.
Two letters of objection were received from members of the public.
"There is a gap at one end of the fencing which could easily be walked around, so I am not sure what benefit this fence will provide," said Anne Amos.
"My main comment is still the screening that should be put in place to shield the site from the canal boats and walkers along the canal."
Joe North added: "There are already at least three caravan sites at Grindley Brook: Canalside Caravan Site; Grindley Brook Park; and Grindley Brook Wharf. This proposed site would make four.
"The proposed site is immediately next to Grindley Brook Wharf caravan site, and it is already difficult for vehicles to gain access onto the main road (A41) due to the road being extremely busy at all times."
However Shropshire Council granted permission, deeming the the scale and design acceptable. The local authority added that it will not result in an adverse visual impact on the surrounding rural character and the character of the canal corridor.
