'Dementia Summit' to be held in Shropshire next month

The summit will explore how to better support people with dementia - and those who care for them

A ’Dementia Summit’ bringing together specialists in dementia and frailty from across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin is set to take place in Newport next month.

The event, convened by Wrekin MP Mark Pritchard, will gather representatives from the NHS, charities, primary care services, local councillors, senior council officers, regional experts, and individuals with direct experience of caring for people living with dementia.

Organisers say the summit aims to explore how local and regional organisations can work together more effectively to address the rising number of dementia cases throughout the Wrekin constituency and beyond.

Discussions will focus on improving support for people living with dementia as well as those who care for them.

The summit will take place on October 30 at 10.30am, with the venue to be announced shortly. A number of expert keynote speakers and panellists have already been confirmed. The event is being held in partnership with the Newport Cottage Care Centre Trust.

Mark Pritchard MP said he was grateful to local partners for helping to organise Newport’s first Dementia Summit, describing it as a “non-political community event” intended to bring together medical practitioners, local authority specialists, carers, families, charity fundraisers and patients.

The MP said: "I am grateful to the Newport Cottage Care Centre Trust, Linden Hall Surgery, and other partners for agreeing to work with me to organise Newport's first ever Dementia Summit.

“I hope the summit will provide an opportunity to share best practice and to understand how local services can be enhanced to support those with dementia and those caring for those people with dementia.”
