Improvement and access works to begin at Shropshire railway station
Work to improve access at Wellington railway station begins next month.
Works to improve access at a Shropshire railway station are set to begin next month.
Wellington railway station is to get new lifts and a footbridge set to make the station more accessible.
The improvements, which begin on Thursday, November 5, will provide lift access between the station’s platforms and entrances for the first time, making journeys more convenient for people with reduced mobility and those travelling with pushchairs or luggage.
Telford & Wrekin Council is contributing £700,000 towards a direct link between the railway station and Wellington bus station, which they say will make it easier for people to switch between bus and rail services and encourage more journeys by public transport.
The wider project is being delivered by Network Rail, with funding through the Department for Transport’s Access for All programme.
Ahead of construction, residents and passengers are invited to a drop-in session at Wellington Library, within Wellington Civic and Leisure Centre, next Tuesday (October 27) from 4pm to 6pm.
The project team will be available to explain the improvements, discuss temporary changes at the station and answer questions.
Councillor Lee Carter, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “As work gets set to begin at Wellington railway station, we want to make sure residents and passengers have the opportunity to find out more about the plans and how they may affect them.
“The drop-in session is a chance to meet the project team, ask questions and learn more about the improvements that will make the station easier to use for everyone.
“This is an important investment in Wellington, and it's great to see construction starting in November. The new lifts and footbridge will improve access around the station and, together with the new direct link to the bus station, make it easier for people to travel by public transport.
“I’d encourage anyone who uses the station, regularly or occasionally, to come along to the session and find out more about what to expect during construction.”
The council said train services will continue to run as normal throughout construction, although there will be temporary changes to parking and walking routes so is urging passengers to plan for a little extra time for their journey.
Part of the station car park will be used for construction, reducing the number of spaces available. Passengers are advised to consider using the nearby Victoria Road South car park.
Accessible parking spaces will be moved to another area within the station car park, and a temporary walking route will be in place. Signs will direct passengers to the relocated spaces and station entrance.
The new lifts and footbridge are expected to open in autumn 2027.
