Man who smashed his way into a Powys home and confronted a police officer with broken bottle, jailed
A repeat offender who smashed his way into a woman's home before later confronting a police officer with a broken glass bottle has been jailed for three years.
Jac Jones of Maes Yr Ithon, Llandrindod Wells was sentenced at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court last week after admitting burglary, possessing an offensive weapon, threatening a person with an offensive weapon, resisting a police officer and criminal damage.
His honour Judge Wayne Beard said Jones' actions during the early hours burglary were 'persistent and determined' and created 'a real and immediate risk of physical harm'.
The court heard Jones broke into a property on Maes Yr Ithon during the early hours of May 30.
A witness watching a film in bed heard glass breaking before seeing a man repeatedly kicking a door and throwing stones through a window to gain entry.
After entering the property Jones left and returned several times at one point appeared to be pouring a liquid on the door and was holding a light in the upstairs bedroom window, before police arrived.
In a victim impact statement the homeowner said: “For a couple of weeks I was scared to stay at home. I live alone and feel very vulnerable.
She added: “I spent a number of nights sleeping at a friends.”
She told the court that she had since installed security cameras and felt betrayed by the defendant.
“I considered him a neighbour and was civil but he betrayed my kindness, I have only been good to him,” she said.
When officers attempted to arrest Jones he ran off. Police chased him but they could not catch him.
Later they went to his address and the door was slightly open but he was not in the property.
PC Thomas heard noises and shouting and he met the defendant on the stairs. Jones closed and locked the door and he was holding a broken bottle which he held towards the officer but PC Thomas pushed him on the stairs and used his PAVA spray. Jones ran upstairs to the bathroom but eventually he was tasered by police officers.
On May 31 he signed a police notebook entry to say he had not taken anything from the house but he gave a no comment interview but admitted to signing the notebook.
The court was told the 31 year-old has 16 convictions for 23 offences including some similar matters.
Judge Beard was told the complainant was not in the house and at the time and nothing was stolen.
Jones has been addicted to drugs for most of his life and they are at the centre of his criminality and he claimed he has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.
The court was told that when he was in prison he was on a methadone programme and he now has a regular injection and in prison he was working in the kitchen and hopes the skills he learnt may help him to find a job.
He said he was remorseful, he was known to the complainant and he sent her pictures on WhatsApp to show her what he had done before she came home to see it.
Judge Beard told Jones the offences were fuelled by his drug intake, he has a significant criminal record with some similar offences and a poor compliance to community based orders.
He jailed Jones for a total of three years and he will have to pay a £228 victim surcharge within three months of his release. A restraining order was made to protect the complainant.
