A planning application is expected to go to Shropshire Council in the coming weeks to turn the building in King Street, into a single-screen cinema.

Former cinema operator Trevor Harris, consultant for the project, said the building could seat 130 or 140 cinema goers.

He wants local families to have access to the latest blockbusters.

He will not name the firm behind the plans but said it wanted to get the cinema up and running for the school holidays although he said it was likely to take longer to get planning permission and convert the building.

"My fear is that if this plan doesn't go through Oswestry will never have a cinema like this. It's our last chance," he said.

"There are a lot of buildings on the industrial estate that are empty and would take very little work to convert to a cinema but we have found them have to be for industrial use so we can not go there.

"The town really needs something like this for all residents as well as for the younger ones."

Mr Harris ran the former Regal Cinema on Leg Street in the town which closed 22 years ago.
