The Labour councillors attended Prime Minister's Questions, where they watched Prime Minister Andy Burnham face questions from MPs, including the Leader of the Opposition.

They also attended a cross-party Westminster Hall debate examining funding opportunities for rural unitary councils such as Shropshire Council.

During their visit, the councillors attended the Environmental Audit Committee, where Natural England and its role in overseeing the Nature Recovery Grant were discussed.

They also followed a parliamentary debate on electoral reform, covering issues including votes at 16, security checks for candidates and greater transparency around party funding.

Councillor Rosemary Dartnall said the group had been fortunate to have seats opposite the Prime Minister during what was the first Prime Minister's Questions for Mr Burnham.

"It was a packed public gallery, and we were honoured to be there," she said.

"We later spent time in committee rooms listening to evidence sessions on women's rights, environmental issues and a debate in Westminster Hall about Government funding for rural local authorities like our own.

"It's always time well spent going to Parliament – the centre of government, an imposing building. I recommend it to everyone."

Ms Buckley said the visit was an opportunity to strengthen links between Westminster and local communities.

She said: "It was a real pleasure to welcome local Labour councillors from Shropshire Council to Westminster.

"The visit provided a valuable opportunity to discuss the issues and priorities affecting my constituency of Shrewsbury, the other constituencies of Shropshire as a whole, to share perspectives on local and national matters, and give an insight into the work that takes place in Parliament that affects our area.

"It all feeds into joined-up working between the council and Parliament, with issues affecting both such as planning, funding, environment and housing.

"It was a very worthwhile visit for all concerned."
