Residents and staff at a Much Wenlock care home enjoyed a taste of Spain during a sherry tasting masterclass.

Wheatlands care home welcomed wine consultant and UK Sherry Brand Ambassador Ellie Scott, from Amante Wine, who took residents on a journey through the history and production of the popular Spanish drink.

The session explored the different styles of sherry, from its origins in Jerez de la Frontera to its popularity around the world today.

Residents had the chance to sample several varieties while Ellie talked them through the different tasting notes and explained the fermentation and ageing processes.

There was also an opportunity to ask questions, with some residents sharing memories of visiting bodegas – traditional wine cellars – in the Jerez region over the years.

Ellie, who founded Amante Wine in 2021 after leaving a career in finance, said: "It was a privilege and a pleasure to share some of our best-loved sherries with the Barchester residents.

"It was a whistle-stop tour but hopefully we gave everyone a good flavour of some of the different sherry styles on offer."

Wheatlands general manager Paula Wiggan said the tasting had gone down well with residents.

"Our residents love nothing more than a glass of sherry so the tasting went down an absolute treat," she said.

"It was very interesting to learn all about the different styles, and our residents are looking forward to trying out some of the other sherries Ellie mentioned."
