New Oswestry Morris group launches with first dance practice

A new Morris dancing group has got off to a lively start after attracting 27 people to its first weekly meeting in Upper Hengoed.

Oswestry Dark Morris held its first dance practice at The Last Inn, with people joining for both the social side of the evening and to take part in learning traditional Border Morris dances.
Founder Mike Lade said the first gathering was a great success, with musicians playing a range of instruments and newcomers getting involved in the high-energy style of dancing.
He said: “We had our first get together with 27 people. Some enjoying the social aspect, some dancing and for many it’s their first time with musicians playing a number of different instruments to have a great fun evening.
“With the guidance of Deb and Andy May as experienced Morris dancers, two dances with sticks were rehearsed – in the true Border style of Morris.”
Border Morris is a traditional form of English folk dance from the Welsh border counties of Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. It is known for its energetic style, stick-clashing routines and simple steps performed to live music.
When performing in public, Oswestry Dark Morris members will wear vibrant “tattered rag coats” and disguise their faces with masks or grease paint, following the customs of the tradition.
Morris dancing dates back centuries, with Border Morris historically performed by agricultural workers during the winter months as a way of earning extra money through busking.
Today, the tradition continues through mixed-gender groups across the UK, with performances at pubs, folk festivals and community events.
Oswestry Dark Morris is now inviting anyone aged 16 and over to join the new group. No previous dancing experience is needed, and musicians with their own instruments are also welcome.
