Dilan Markanday scored the decisive goal for the Spireites.

Chesterfield’s assistant manager Danny Webb praised their resilience and determination after claiming a 2-1 win at Oldham.

Favour Fawunmi cancelled out the Spireites’ opener from Lee Bonis, who converted the rebound after his spot-kick for an adjudged handball by Gus Scott-Morriss was saved.

But Chesterfield got back in front quickly through Dilan Markanday and held on for only their second victory of the season and first in four games.

“We saw a team gradually coming together,” said Webb.

“It’s great for the lads, it’s great for supporters, it’s great for us as staff.

“We knew Oldham would want to get in our faces so it was standing up to that and not getting rolled over and not going behind.

“We took the lead and they break our hearts five minutes into the second half and you hope the momentum then doesn’t swing in their favour, but there was a real desire from our players to get that win today.

“There’s still loads to improve on, we’re certainly not the finished article yet but it’s a nice time for our supporters to enjoy the weekend.”

Webb was particularly pleased for Bonis after previous penalty misses.

“What’s nice is when it (the rebound) falls to him, he’s nice and composed and puts it in and we’re very pleased for him to score,” Webb said.

Oldham manager Micky Mellon was disappointed by the penalty decision but also his side’s performance.

“I don’t think we did enough, but we’ve been punished by a penalty. If that’s a penalty we’re in trouble, it’s just crazy,” he said.

“I thought he was really poor, I thought he lost his way the referee. But you’ve still got to get on with that and you’ve still got to be better when you get the opportunities to play.

“We got ourselves back into it at 1-1 and you’re just thinking for the next five-10 minutes ‘give nothing away’ but we’ve got a bit of momentum from scoring a goal and then we gave away too-quick a goal from a straight ball from their third.

“We get ourselves involved in a race, we lose the race, the ball comes in and it’s bouncing around and the guy scores.

“We kind of huffed and puffed, we missed a good chance at the back post we just didn’t do enough to try to win the game. We weren’t a good version of ourselves all day.

“We tried to do different things but couldn’t get that spark.”
