'Time to be patient' - Alejandro Garnacho delivered Aston Villa message

The winger has struggled to make an impression early in his loan spell.

Unai Emery has told Alejandro Garnacho he must stay patient for his chance at Villa after the winger watched a third straight match from the bench.

The Chelsea loanee was not included in Villa’s team for Wednesday’s Carabao Cup win at Coventry, despite Emery making seven changes to the starting XI from the weekend’s Premier League defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Garnacho then failed to make it onto the pitch as Villa cruised to a 3-1 victory at the CBS Arena, making it three straight matches he has failed to make it onto the pitch.

The 22-year-old has been limited to just three substitute appearances so far this season and when asked what more he needs to do for game-time, Emery replied: “Continue working. Work, work, train, work.

“When he can have minutes to play, try and play well. He is progressing, but we have players in front of him now.”

Emery handed a full debut to Villa’s other new winger, Ibrahim Mbaye, at Coventry, while George Hemmings continued his run in the team and set up the opener for Tammy Abraham.

Two other arrivals, Johan Manzambi and Nicolas Jackson, were brought off the bench but having used another change to replace injured goalkeeper Marco Bizot, Emery introduced Alysson with his final change as a frustrated Garnacho watched on.

Emery said: “George is playing fantastic. Alysson is also understanding things well and is giving us things I want. Mbaye also responded well.

“We want a competitive team and players to compete in the style we have. Garnacho is a little bit behind because of some circumstances we had in pre-season. It is time to be patient for the time he needs.”
