Within Shropshire, there are six School Sports Partnerships. All infant, junior, primary, secondary, FE colleges and special schools within the county are involved in the programme.

The main focus of the programme is "to enhance the take-up of sporting opportunities by 5 to 16-year-olds, so the percentage of school children who spend a minimum of two hours each week on high-quality PE and school sport ,within and beyond the curriculum, increases".
The ultimate vision is that by 2011, all children will be offered at least five hours of sport every week, which will comprise of at least two hours of high-quality PE and sport at school, and the opportunity for at least a further two or three hours beyond the school day within the community.
Today's Shropshire Star features the first in a series of Rising Stars supplements, promoting the work being done across the county to encourage stimulating sport and exercise among our young people. Each will provide details about what's going on and looking at some of the activities round the county.
Do you enjoy sport but don't get a chance to take part out of school? Do you not want to be in a team, but would still like to play a bit more sport? Do you feel apprehensive about going to something where you're new to the sport or everyone's better at it than you?
If any of these apply to you, then a national scheme called Sport Unlimited could be the answer.
Sport Unlimited is a chance for you to have a go at a wide variety of sports, many of which may not be the usual thing you would think of. Yes, there's football and rugby and cricket, but there are also sports such as trampolining, martial arts, fencing, rowing, fishing and many more . . . all on our doorstep in Shropshire, and Telford & Wrekin.
You can take part at leisure centres, sports clubs or wherever the sport is based – even on a river if you're rowing or fishing. Everything is run by qualified sports coaches, keen to introduce you to their sport and help you enjoy it.
Sessions take place once a week for eight weeks and if you enjoy it and want more then there are many opportunities to carry on afterwards. Many of the courses are free or cost very little, you don't necessarily have to have the 'right kit' and you and your friends can go together and give it a go.
If you would call yourself a semi-sporty person, then Sport Unlimited is for you. You can find out more by asking one of the PE teachers at your local school or taking a look at the Sport Unlimited web page at www.shropshire.gov.uk/sports.nsf
