What does Lino Sousa’s arrival at Shrewsbury Town mean for Kevin Berkoe?
Sousa competition could take Kevin Berkoe to ‘even better levels’ at Salop.
Boss Gavin Cowan hopes Lino Sousa’s arrival at Shrewsbury Town will “elevate” Kevin Berkoe to another level.
Berkoe has been one of Shrewsbury’s stand-out performers during a difficult start to the new campaign, but now faces competition for the left wing-back role.
Sousa, 21, was Town’s final addition before deadline day, joining on loan from Aston Villa, and Cowan is relishing the battle for the shirt.
Asked what Sousa will bring to Salop, Cowan said: “Pace, athleticism, competition for places.

“He is a really good player - highly thought of. I’m hoping he’s going to offer some bravery and some courage.
“Kevin is a massive part of what we do. But there are 46 games in a season, so they need to fight for their place.
“Hopefully, it’ll elevate Kevin to even better levels. I think he’s been good on the whole.

“But Lino comes in and he’s fighting for his place. I’ve got no obligation to play anyone, they have to fight for a position on the pitch.”
Sousa was not included in Town’s squad for their midweek defeat at Rochdale, but will now hope to break through and make an impact.
Fellow new loanees Michael Golding and Kian McMahon-Brown were included at Rochdale, with both making their debuts during the second half of the heavy defeat.
“I was really, really pleased with the young lads that came on,” admitted Cowan.
“I thought the skipper was willing to lay his life on the line for it. I think Luca maybe comes out with a bit of credit. Outside of that, it’s a hard sell.”
Republic of Ireland youth international McMahon-Brown joined Town on his first career loan after impressing in Burnley’s academy.
After his brief cameo on Tuesday, Cowan hopes the 18-year-old can provide a much-needed spark in attack.
“We’re all hoping so,” he said. “He’s really highly thought of at Burnley. He’s definitely a young player that I think could add some real quality.”
