Former Shrewsbury Town loan favourite becomes free agent after Championship exit

Former Shrewsbury Town loan favourite Greg Docherty has become a free agent after leaving Championship club Charlton Athletic.
Docherty departed the Addicks by mutual consent after the transfer window closed. The midfielder had been the club’s captain, but has now left The Valley and is free to find a new club.
Docherty made 50 appearances in all competitions during a successful loan spell at Shrewsbury from Scottish side Rangers in the 2018/19 season.

After leaving Rangers, Docherty spent four seasons at Hull City before joining Charlton in July 2024. The 29-year-old made 90 appearances for the Addicks, with his final outing coming in last week’s EFL Cup defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Speaking following his departure, Docherty said: “To be named captain of such an iconic football club was nothing short of a privilege.
“I felt the weight and expectation that title carries, but I can wholeheartedly say I gave my absolute all to represent the club properly every single day with the upmost respect that I felt it deserved through the good and the bad moments.
“I’ll always be grateful for my time at Charlton and everything the club has given me, but football moves fast I’m now excited to see what the future holds.”
Docherty captained Charlton to promotion to the Championship in his debut season and played a key role as the club retained their second-tier status last season.
The Scot is now a free agent and will be searching for his next club.
A statement from Charlton said: “Everyone at the club would like to thank Greg for his immense contribution and wish him and his family all the very best for the future.”
