Ex-Shrewsbury Town captain John Marquis seals non-league move

Former Shrewsbury Town captain John Marquis has found a new club after his free-agent spell.

Former Shrewsbury Town captain John Marquis has sealed a move to non-league, while several ex-Salop players remain free agents.

Marquis was one of a number of former Town players to feature at the Professional Footballers’ Association’s (PFA) free-agent training camp this summer.

The striker scored four times during the programme and has now secured a move to the National League, joining Woking on a one-year deal.

It begins Marquis’ second spell in non-league after a brief work-experience loan with Staines Town in the Conference South in 2010.

The 34-year-old boasts more than 500 EFL appearances and 171 career goals. He scored 18 goals in 86 appearances for Shrewsbury during his two years at the club.

Marquis had been seen supporting former club Bristol Rovers at Crawley Town on Saturday before, on what was transfer deadline day for EFL clubs, completing his move to Woking.

His new club currently sits 21st in the National League, with one win from their opening five league games.

Marquis scored against Hednesford Town and QPR Under-21s, as well as twice against Barnet, while featuring for the PFA’s out-of-contract XI this summer.

The PFA’s free-agent training camp supports members who are looking for a new club. The programme combines training, friendly matches and wellbeing support to help players maintain their fitness and prepare for their next opportunity.

The camp is now in its 10th week, with several former Salop players still participating.

They include goalkeeper Jamal Blackman, defender James Bolton and forwards Fejiri Okenabirhie and Anthony Scully.
