Town consider another glamour friendly

Shrewsbury Town are considering a high-profile pre-season friendly against top opposition to help them prepare for life back in League One.

Town hosted Turkish giants Galatasaray ahead of the 2013-14 season, losing 3-0 to a star-studded side that included Didier Drogba and Wesley Sneijder.

The club have already agreed warm up games against Wolves, Cardiff and Tranmere Rovers.

And chief executive Matt Williams has not ruled out European opposition gracing the Greenhous Meadow again – but only if it is the best thing for the team.

He said: "We are delighted to have got Wolves and Cardiff here and we are pleased with the trip to Tranmere.

"We are going to try to slot at least another two games in, possibly three, and if one of those is a high-profile game then happy days. But it is all about preparation for the new season.

"I appreciate that Galatasaray have whetted the appetite of the Shropshire people because of the likes of Drogba and Sniedjer coming there.

"So you have got to look at that, and we have a lot of contact with agents who look to place overseas teams.

"But you have to temper it with the pre-season schedule and what (manager) Micky (Mellon) wants to do.

"A game like Galatasary might be fantastic for the club but it might not be the most ideal preparation for the players."

Williams added that there were addition financial implications which have to be considered when hosting high-profile opposition.

He said: "When you look at any pre-season game you don't want to make a loss on it. You don't want policing costs to be excessive.

"You have also got to take into account what the other clubs want. Galatasaray were training at St George's Park and they came over to play us."
