Shrewsbury Town chief executive warns suitors they are not out to sell players

Shrewsbury Town chief executive Matt Williams has warned clubs that it will take huge bids to persuade the club to part company with any of their top performers.

Despite the transfer window opening, Williams says Town's solid finances mean no player will leave unless it's right for the club.

And the supremo said Town are not looking to cash in on any stars with everyone inside Greenhous Meadow fully focused on winning promotion.

"We have received one or two enquires since the window opened – and we would be disappointed if we hadn't, because we are playing some good football," Williams said.

"But do we need to sell anybody? No, we don't. Are we a well-run club? Yes we are.

"Of course if an offer was right for the football club and right for the player then we would consider it.

"A League One club might ring up and say they want one of our players and I might think, with all due respect, they aren't as big as Shrewsbury Town.

"We are going for promotion, we want to keep our best players and I might say to them the move is not a right one for everyone involved. We will only act in the club's best interests."

Williams, previously club secretary at Blackpool, revealed the club tells players when a bid is made for them and always make it clear why an offer is accepted or rejected.

"It's very important you let players know," he said.

"At Blackpool we had Charlie Adam who one January could have had his pick of Premier League clubs. Liverpool, Tottenham were just a few of the teams interested but the bids were refused.

"But as much as he was still integral to the squad, he wasn't quite the same player.

You have to temper what the club needs and the needs of the player."
