Shrewsbury Town boss Mellon keen to do more business

Busy Shrewsbury Town boss Micky Mellon has reflected on his transfer frenzy and insisted: "There might be more to come".

Mellon has hinted at another move for Crystal Palace's Sullay Kaikai after a staggering 10 deals in the opening week of the January transfer window.

Richie Wellens and Kyle Vassell were the latest two in yesterday, while Mark Ellis joined Carlisle on a permanent basis.

Jack Grimmer and Andy Mangan, plus the loan extension of Larnell Cole complete the 'ins' so far, while James Collins, Liam McAlinden, Liam Lawrence and Tyrone Barnett have also left.

But Mellon hasn't finished yet. "We would still like to do one or two further bits of business to strengthen us to keep the team moving forwards," said the boss.

"We'd like to bring back a special winger that we all know about (Kaikai) if we get chance. But we're pleased with our business."

At 35, Wellens has signed an 18-month contract, while Vassell has joined on loan to the end of the season.

Wellens admitted the length of contract offered was a key factor in his decision to sign.

"The 18 months was a big thing. I feel fit and can play for a couple more seasons," said the midfielder, who has played almost 600 League games for Blackpool, Oldham, Leicester and two spells with Doncaster, who he left before Christmas.

"Micky's brought me in to stay in the league. If we can stay in the league this season then next year we can progress even more."

Vassell has struggled for goals with five in 28 games for Peterborough, from where he joins Town, and three in 12 for Dagenham on loan.

But Mellon is convinced he can hit the net for Town. "He's got a very good scoring pedigree and he's the type of player I feel we're going to need alongside Andy Mangan, Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro and Scott Vernon," he added.

Ellis has signed a two-and-a-half-year deal at Carlisle.
