‘Should have been a zip-zip draw’ - Pete Wild assessment after defeat to Shrewsbury Town

Tranmere Rovers boss Pete Wild thought it should have been a goalless draw

Pete Wild believed his Tranmere Rovers side’s defeat to Shrewsbury Town was a game that should have ended goalless.

Shrewsbury edged the contest 1-0 thanks to Sam Stubbs’ second-half header, bringing an end to their losing and scoreless run.

The result lifts Salop 11 points clear of the drop zone, while Tranmere’s struggles continue, leaving them just three points above danger after a fourth game without finding the net.

“There was a lot of nothing from both sides today,” said Rovers boss Wild.

“Sadly they have come out on top in a game that should have been a zip-zip draw.”

Tranmere managed just six shots compared to Shrewsbury’s 20, with the home side’s greater attacking intent ultimately paying off when Stubbs rose to head home what proved to be the winner.

The travelling Tranmere supporters, for whom tickets had sold out, made their frustrations clear at the final whistle.

Asked if he thought his side could have utilised the ball better in possession, he added: “Maybe, but not in the first half because the game didn’t allow us to.

“The wind actually died in the second half and was better for them.

“But we have got to be better on the ball.”
