‘Really keen’ - Gavin Cowan issues Favour Fawunmi update

Shrewsbury Town remain keen on Favour Fawunmi, with Gavin Cowan saying the club are seeing if a deal is possible.

Gavin Cowan says Shrewsbury Town remain “really keen” on Stoke City youngster Favour Fawunmi.

The Salop boss provided an update on the club’s pursuit of the 20-year-old, who trained with Town earlier in pre-season and featured in their opening friendly.

Fawunmi is currently away with Stoke City as they continue their pre-season preparations ahead of the new Championship campaign. The winger featured for the Potters in their friendly against Sheffield Wednesday in Austria on Saturday, and was substituted after suffering a knock.

Cowan had previously revealed he was hopeful of agreeing a loan deal for Fawunmi, and the Shrewsbury boss has reiterated the club’s interest in the youngster.

Asked for an update by the Shropshire Star, Cowan said: “He was never really on trial, he came in because we’re really keen.

“We’re really keen on the player. It’s just logistical. It’s just one of them where we’re just trying to sort things out, if we’re in a position to do so.

“So we’re just waiting at the moment. But he’s a fantastic prospect, he’s a fantastic player. And yeah, I think it’s an option if we want to do it.”

After linking up with Cowan’s squad, Fawunmi featured in Salop’s opening pre-season friendly at Stafford Rangers earlier this month.

Following his second-half appearance, the Town boss praised the winger, who spent time on loan at Leyton Orient last season, and admitted he had been impressed by what he had seen.

Speaking during Salop’s trip to the Isle of Man, Cowan revealed he remained hopeful of bringing the Stoke youngster to the Croud Meadow ahead of the new League Two campaign.

Fawunmi featured in Stoke’s second game against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday as the Potters secured a 4-0 win, during which he was withdrawn.

Stoke boss Mark Robins said: “I thought he did pretty well to be fair, until he got a knock and taken off.

“I think Favour just took a knock. I think he was ok.”
