The Valiants are under no illusions about the size of the task that awaits them at the Greenhous Meadow, with Shrewsbury unbeaten on their own patch all season.

But the men from the Potteries will arrive in Shropshire boosted by successive 1-0 wins against Rotherham and Plymouth Argyle.

Those results signalled an end to a four-match losing streak and have lifted them back within striking distance of the play-offs. "Confidence is the key at this level and certainly going into it a game of this importance you would want to have had two decent results," said Adams.

"We've managed to achieve that in the last two games, along with two clean sheets.

"But we don't take it for granted that all we've got to do on Saturday is turn up because the level of opposition will be a test for us," he added.

"So we'll have to be at our best to get anything out of the game, but we'll go there in a positive frame of mind."

The former Fulham and Brighton boss is under no illusions about the size of their task in Shropshire, though.

Vale have not lost away to Town since 1977 but their manager knows Shrewsbury's strong home form – unbeaten this season – marks them out as formidable opposition.

"Shrewsbury's home record has catapulted them into the promotion picture after winning 10 games and drawing three on their own patch," said Adams.

"That shows what a difficult place Shrewsbury is to go and play.

"In terms of our preparation everything has gone OK this week and nothing major has developed on the injury front.

"But we know how difficult the game is going to be against a very good Shrewsbury team," said the Vale boss.
