Mike Jackson tells Shrewsbury Town to get up for battle

Shrewsbury Town boss Mike Jackson admits his team have lacked enough strong characters this season ahead of today's potentially-decisive home clash with Peterborough United.

Town were due to welcome Darren Ferguson's side to the Greenhous Meadow knowing anything less than a victory would confirm relegation to League Two with a game to spare.

With Town six points from safety they were also relying on the teams above them losing if they were to enter the final game of the season at Gillingham with anything to play for.

With an disappointing season drawing to a conclusion, Jackson conceded the team had not stepped up and got a grip of games when it really counted.

And asked if there were enough strong characters in the dressing room he said: "There are some but for me we haven't had enough. And again with some of them it's just their personality, they are not that type of people.

"They train well and prepare well. They are good professionals but I think a few of them are the first to admit that they are not that vocal driver. And we needed more of that."

Despite their precarious position in the league, Jackson has demanded that the players show some pride and fight in the remaining games.

And he wants them to get back to their belligerent best defensively after shipping 10 goals in a run of three straight defeats prior to today.

He said: "We have got to make sure that we get back to where we were a couple of games ago. From being hard to beat and quite solid, not giving much away, we have gone away from that.

"We have got to make a fight of it but it is the detail involved in that. It is not just a question of 'fight' because what a couple are doing now is they are running round without thinking.

"Whereas before we were getting close to people, we were stopping the crosses, blocking shots, we were picking up second balls.

"That's all the scrappy, horrible bits of football and we were doing them well, but we have stopped doing them."
