Mellon urges Town to be cup heroes again

Shrewsbury Town manager Micky Mellon has challenged his big-game players to be cup heroes again and cause an upset against Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow.

Town host the Championship play-off hopefuls aiming to reach the FA Cup fifth round for the first time since 1991 in front of a bumper Greenhous Meadow crowd.

Andy Mangan was the match-winner at Cardiff in the last round after scoring against Chelsea and Leicester in the Capital One Cup last season.

And Mellon wants his players to rise to the occasion again, saying: "I hope he scores again! Let's hope he can do what he's done very well in the recent games and get us another goal.

"The players have a history of doing that and they enjoy the challenge. Let's hope they can continue it.

"They all have dreams and ambitions to improve their careers. "It's another game to show people how good they are and be measured against a top Championship team."

Mellon admits he doesn't know which Shrewsbury is going to turn up amid the inconsistency riddling the team.

He said: "It's what my missus calls a packet of Revels – you just don't know which one you're going to get next – but they're a fantastic bunch of lads.

"On Tuesday we had one of those horrible coffee ones, but tomorrow we want a long-lasting toffee one that doesn't go too quickly.

"They're all absolutely committed. They've beaten themselves up and came in yesterday morning and trained really well.

"In fact they came in with that hunger and desire to want to get back on the training pitch. We've got about them, but there's a lot of experience in there.

"It's just when they cross that white line, we're in the lap of the gods really."

Town are without cup-tied duo Richie Wellens and Kyle Vassell. Jordan Clark and Scott Vernon stand by.
