Meet the new Shrewsbury Town striker studying for a law degree

Shrewsbury Town signing Joe Gbode has revealed his surprising life away from football.

When he’s not on the pitch for Shrewsbury Town, Joe Gbode is likely to have his head buried in the books studying for a law degree.

The 21-year-old became Salop’s latest summer signing on Monday after joining on a season-long loan from Luton Town.

The forward has already gained valuable EFL experience despite his young age, first at Gillingham, where he progressed through the academy, and more recently with the Hatters.

But while his playing career is still in its early stages, Gbode is already planning for life after football by studying law with The Open University.

Asked what he gets up to away from the pitch, Gbode said: “Not much really apart from studying. I’m going into my first year studying law at The Open University.

“On top of that I just like to sleep. I sleep a lot. If you know me, you know that.

“Even on holiday, I need rest. That’s just what I like to do most of the time.”

His daily routine is therefore likely to look a little different from some of his team-mates, with training during the day followed by studying in the evening.

The 21-year-old revealed his family’s academic background played a big part in his decision to pursue a degree as he plans for the long term.

“It’s for later,” he added. “It’s always been an interest.

“I come from a family of academics. It’s just natural to me, especially the way my parents raised me.”

Gbode will now be hoping to make an early impression at his new club during Shrewsbury’s opening pre-season fixtures.

Salop begin their preparations with a trip to non-league Stafford Rangers before heading to the Isle of Man to compete in the island’s summer football festival.
