Meet Joe Gbode: The lowdown on Shrewsbury Town's new loan signing
Gbode has joined Shrewsbury on a season-long loan deal from League One side Luton Town.
Joe Gbode has become the latest Shrewsbury Town summer signing - here's everything you need to know about him.
Gbode has arrived at the Croud Meadow on a season-long loan from League One side Luton Town. The 21-year-old is Salop's seventh signing of the summer.
He arrives after a spell in the National League during the latter stages of last season and will be looking to make an early impression during pre-season.
Career beginnings
London-born Gbode joined Gillingham's academy at under-15 level.
He made his first-team debut for Gillingham in November 2021, aged just 16, when he came on as a substitute in an FA Cup tie.
Gbode made his league debut four days later, again appearing as a substitute away at Crewe Alexandra.
Loan moves
Gbode had several loan spells in non-league football during his time with Gillingham between 2021 and September last year.
Those included stints at Margate, Folkestone Invicta and Hastings United in the Isthmian League Premier, as well as Aveley in the National League South.
His loan spell with the Essex club was cut short in February 2024 after Gillingham were hit by a number of injuries in the forward positions.
Gillingham
The 2024/25 season proved to be Gbode’s breakthrough campaign at Gillingham. In September 2024, he signed a new contract until the end of the 2026/27 season, with the option of a further year.
He made 34 League Two appearances that season, scoring three goals. He then made a further four appearances at the start of last season before completing a move to Luton.
Luton
Gbode signed for former Premier League side Luton Town for an undisclosed fee on September 1 last year.
The 21-year-old made his debut as a substitute in a 3-2 home defeat to Plymouth Argyle. He has made five League One appearances for Luton so far.
In January this year, Gbode joined National League side Woking on loan until the end of the season. He made 15 appearances, scoring three goals.
Now, Gbode arrives in Shropshire looking to make his mark and help improve Town’s goalscoring return from last season.
