Letter demanding ‘more transparency’ from Shrewsbury Town owner attracts 800 signatures in 24 hours

Fans are backing a letter demanding answers over Shrewsbury’s Town’s future.

A letter demanding “more transparency” over Shrewsbury Town’s future and proposed takeover has attracted 800 signatures in just 24 hours.

Several supporter groups have united to call on long-standing owner Roland Wycherley to answer questions about the club’s future and potential sale.

The letter, released at midday on Sunday, posed six questions and called for a public response by Sunday, September 20. A petition was also launched for supporters to endorse the letter, attracting 800 signatures within its first 24 hours.

A spokesperson for the groups said: “As representatives of numerous supporter groups connected to Shrewsbury Town, we always believed it was important to give individual fans a voice by inviting them to digitally sign the letter.

“It has been gratifying to see the response since the letter was published on Sunday lunchtime, with around 800 fans and counting endorsing it so far.

“That does serve as a show of the strength of feeling around the club, and we shouldn’t be surprised because it clearly means so much to so many people.

“There is still time for more supporters to add their name. If you agree with what we are saying, then sign it yourself.

“We hope the letter will be received in the positive spirit in which it was sent, and look forward to the response.”

The letter was formed and endorsed by a number of groups affiliated with and connected to the club: the Official Supporters Club, Salopcast, South Stand Flags, Super Blues Committee, Her Game Too - STFC, B&A Fanzine, Away Travel Club, Proud Salopians and STFC Away Supporters.

The six questions cover the takeover process, the identity of the prospective buyer, the expected timescale for the deal and what supporters can do to ensure a “smooth and orderly transition” to a new ownership group.

The letter also acknowledged Wycherley’s 30 years as owner and his achievements during that time, but warned the club’s recent struggles could “tarnish that record”.

It comes after chief executive Liam Dooley said last month that the proposed takeover of Shrewsbury Town by an American consortium “continues to move forward”. Terms of the deal were agreed in mid-June.

Shrewsbury have endured a difficult start to the new 2026/27 season, winning just one of their opening five League Two matches. Town also battled for Football League survival last season following their relegation from League One.

The supporter groups have expressed fears that the club could drop out of the EFL.

The letter said: “You once stated that relegation to non-League in 2003 was the worst feeling in your life and that you did not feel able to go out in public for three months afterwards.

“Please do not allow one of your last acts as Shrewsbury Town chairman be to suffer that pain all over again. This club has been your life, that much is plain to see, but it takes strength to recognise that the time has come to hand over the baton to a new generation. That time for Shrewsbury Town is surely now.”
