Kyle Vassell's burning ambition at Shrewsbury

Striker Kyle Vassell admits he needs his fire back – and he's hoping to set things alight at Shrewsbury Town.

The 22-year-old is looking for a regular run of games after an indifferent season so far with Peterborough and a loan spell at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Pacy Vassell has scored just three goals in 19 games this term, with all his strikes coming for Dagenham in the FA Cup.

Boss Micky Mellon was alerted to Vassell when he was scoring prolifically for non-league Bishops Stortford, where he netted 13 goals in 16 games in 2013-14.

It's that record he is looking to rediscover at the Greenhous Meadow after a patchy time at London Road, where he has struck six times in 36 games.

Vassell said: "I need that fire back in me and, hopefully, I can do that here,. It's like I'm back in pre-season and my season is starting now because I haven't really got going yet.

"I'm excited and looking forward to it. If I don't score for a couple of games people will question me, but hopefully the boys can give me the service and I can score some goals."

Mellon once signed Jamie Vardy ahead of Vassell for Fleetwood and the latter revealed the Town boss has filled him with confidence so he will be ready if he gets his chance against Barnsley tomorrow.

He said: "He made me feel very good about myself and gave me confidence so, hopefully, I can do well here."

Vassell sees his arrival at Town as a fresh start among some new faces – and some familiar ones too.

He said: "Hopefully, I can get that here. It's a great dressing room. I know Nat Knight-Percival from Peterborough and I know a few of the other boys from playing against them.

"Richie Wellens came the same day as me and he's a good player. You can see in training there's a lot of quality and I'm looking forward to being involved.

"They're a great bunch; training has been good and played at a high tempo which is what I need so I'm looking forward to playing."

Meanwhile, fellow new-boy James Wallace admits he isn't expecting to walk straight into the team.

Since Town's last league game against Chesterfield, Liam Lawrence has left and Abu Ogogo has been ruled out for six weeks.

Wallace said: "It's not going to be easy to get into the starting line-up straight away. I might have to bide my time, especially after a great result at Cardiff.

"There's Ian Black, who played for Rangers and Richie Wellens has played in the Championship, so I'll have to work hard to get into the team. When I get my chance I've got to take it."

With in-form Barnsley one point and two places above them, Wallace recognises the importance of tomorrow's match.

He said: "It's a big game. They're close to us in the table, so it's vitally important we get a win."
