Salop lost Josh Ruffels, Josh Davison and Jay Turner-Cooke on Friday, ahead of their weekend trip to the Mornflake Stadium, forcing Cowan to reshuffle his squad.

Town went behind in the first half when Jordan Gibson headed home from close range, but George Lloyd levelled before the break.

It was Shrewsbury's first point on the road in League Two this season, and it followed an impressive win over Northampton at Croud Meadow last time out.

Cowan admitted the loss of three key players was a big blow so close to the game, but he heaped praise on those who earned the point at Crewe.

“You have got to remember we lost three players in training on Friday,” he said. “The ones who came in did brilliantly. Those who came off the bench were excellent as well so I am really pleased with the whole squad.

“It just shows how professional this group are. We are evolving, we are a completely new group. When you look at us, I said perspective is needed last week.

“Perspective is not us settling for being just above the relegation zone or mid-table. It is perspective on the fact that we have lost a lot of games over the last five years. These players are being held accountable for what has gone on previously.

“They need a bit of time, they need to ease their way into playing for Shrewsbury Town and understanding the way we play. If we stay patient, this group could achieve something.”
