Shrewsbury Town business to heat up after missing out on loan signing

Shrewsbury Town boss Paul Hurst expects business to heat up in the final days of the transfer window after missing out on a loan deal for Sullay Kaikai.

Hurst was keen to bring the talented Crystal Palace attacker back to the Meadow for a second loan spell, the Shropshire Star understands.

But the 22-year-old has instead decided to join Town’s League One rivals Charlton, with location thought to be the deciding factor as Kaikai opted to remain in the capital.

Kaikai became a huge Town favourite as he scored 12 goals in 29 outings while on loan from Selhurst Park two seasons ago under Micky Mellon.

Town have so far this month brought in defenders Max Lowe on loan from Derby and Luke Hendrie on a nominal fee from Burnley.

Hurst is eager to ensure promotion-chasing Town are in the best possible shape for what promises to be a gruelling run-in League One and wants at least one more signing before Wednesday’s deadline.

Sheffield United winger Nathan Thomas is a prime target and discussions have taken place between the two clubs over a potential deal. But a number of other players are also under consideration with Hurst keen to ensure he ends the campaign with no regrets.

“If we miss out, I want it to be through bad luck or not quite good enough,” he said. “I don’t want to look back thinking: ‘I wish we could have signed that extra player’.

“I think we definitely need a body, if not a couple."
