But he has not been able to find the right man and will rely instead on current trio Matty Lewis, Luke Reynolds and Lee Moore to keep finding the target.

Lewis already has five goals this season while Reynolds and Moore have three each. And it is that form that has convinced Smith a new signing is not essential, even though Justin Marsden will be out for up to three months.

"Nothing's going to happen before Saturday, that's for sure," said Smith. "With one thing or another we just haven't felt it's right.

"It's very difficult to get the right one in, in terms of finances. We'd have to pay a fee and the loan deal we were looking at wasn't right.

"The three lads we've got are all doing okay and I still think they're as good as anything in this league. If I get an injury it will force my hand, but for now we're okay. We've got Cornesy (Chris Cornes) who can play in the hole as well, so we've got good options.

"We were offered a couple of Conference players, but they've not been getting in their own teams for one reason or another, and there's a question of whether their attitude would be right."

Meanwhile, Smith will welcome Moore and midfielder Jon Adams back to training tonight, with the duo returning from Turkey, where they have been on duty with the England futsal team in a four nations tournament.

"It'll be good to have them back and I'm just hoping they're injury-free," added Smith. "I think they should be because it's pretty much a non-contact game."

* Admission prices for Tuesday's Setanta Shield clash at home to Solihull Moors have been set at £7 for adults, £5 for concessions and £1 for under-16s - but the game will be postponed if the Bucks are involved in an FA Cup replay with Matlock instead.
