Differing BDO group finals for Ted Hankey

Telford's Ted Hankey won a group final and lost another competing in the BDO British Classic and British Open competitions.

The two-time BDO world champion travelled to the Spa in Bridlington to take his place for both men's singles tournaments,

First he was a part of the British Classic on Saturday, where he prevailed from Group 31 with four imperious whitewashes.

'The Count' drubbed Johnny Scott, Stephen Bulmer and Geraint Davies 3-0, before a 4-0 victory over David Calvert when play was upgraded to a best-of-seven legs format.

Hankey was then paired with Martin Adams, a fellow former Lakeside champion and three times an opponent at the worlds.

'Wolfie' has also dumped him out of the Belgium Open and European Classic this year and made it a hat-trick for this year, with a 4-1 win at the Spa in the last 32.

Hankey returned to the oche at the same venue on Sunday for the Open, where he was again placed into Group 31.

The 48-year-old, who lives in Aqueduct, reached the group decider but, this time, was thwarted in the last leg 4-3 by another former world titlist, Andy Fordham.

Hankey had defeated Jaron Esteve 3-1, before battling past Les Street and Willie Kershaw 3-2 to set up the Fordham clash.
