Planning pays off as bowlers take stunning first win in national competition
All the latest action from around the county’s bowling greens.
All the time effort that went into launching an Oswestry team in the Federation of Crown Green Bowls has been rewarded.

A resounding 27-5 victory on points over Doncaster B in their second match in the new division 10 lifted Rhys Griffiths & Co to second in the table.
“Amazing result for the Oswestry Fed!” was the reaction of Griffiths, the Johnstown man who drove the project forward.
“Victory by 19-5 on games and the aggregate was won by 160 with the players of the matches being Gareth Davies at home and Megis Phillips away.”
Phillips and Jono Shaw won 21-6 at Brodsworth Welfare as 10 out of 12 winners delivered a superb 77-chalk victory.
At Llanymynech, Davies won 21-4 at No.1, Gary Wilkie added a 21-9 card in the middle and a back four push led by Kelly Richardson (21-5) took the margin to 83 chalks, with Griffiths celebrating the historic day with his own 21-10 win at No.12.
County Women’s Cup
Oswestry League big guns Johnstown make their debut in the Shropshire Cup tonight as the much-boosted County Women’s Cup also has lift off.
The bowls club based near Ruabon take on Bridgnorth in a 10-a-side match at the neutral venue of Prince Hotel in Shrewsbury as one of five ties that will produce a last 16 in the Shropshire Cup.
Meanwhile, an improved entry of eight teams will contest the Shropshire Ladies’ run County Women’s Cup, the eight-a-side knockout having been plagued by withdrawals in recent years.
Those quarter-final ties and venues are: Allscott Heath A v Broseley A (at Maddocks); Allscott Heath B v Bowring B (at Trench); SJ Bayley B v St Georges (at Donnington Wood); while Bowring A v SJ Bayley A is date and venue to be confirmed.
Ladies competition secretaries Louise Cotton and Cheryl Caswell have already set the dates for the semi-finals (Weds July 15) and final (Tues Sept 15).
Tonight’s other Shropshire Cup ties – Charlton v Meole Brace (at Hodnet); Hodnet v Wrockwardine Wood (at Greenfields 2); Bridgewater v Bowring (at Monkmoor); District v Newport (at Bicton).
