The Malpas Sports partners came out of top of the 22 pairs who entered the North Shropshire bowls association promotion at Whitchurch club Bridgewater.

They repeated their triumphs of 2017 and 2018 by beating Wem USC’s Sarah Weaver and Dave Hanson 21-19 in a final on Saturday that could have gone either way.

Bennett & Bradley defeat Ann Breakwell & Chris Dodds 21-11 in the semi-finals as Weaver & Hanson saw off Dawn Gray & Melvin Humphreys 21-15.

But Gray, the secretary of the county association and Tanners Shropshire League, had the pleasure of seeing her daughter and Hadnall clubmate, Hannah, win the consolation KO with Dan Corbett thanks to a 21-7 card against Christine Humphreys & John Dunn.

British Super Cup

Wrockwardine Wood are closing in on another piece of coveted silverware.

As well as preparing to face holders Sir John Bayley in Saturday’s County Cup final at Shifnal, the Wrockites are through to the quarter-finals of the British Super Cup.

They will take on Wharton in the 31-up four home-four way knockout after seeing off Penn by 78 shots overall, skipper Liam Stevens winning 31-3 at home and Chris Grocott and Ed Proudlove 31-18 away.

Castlefields, who are also through to the last eight, are now into the semi-finals of the Midlands-based Free Press Cup after beating Premier League rivals Sir John Bayley.

Fields won the five home-five away tie by 56 shots. Mike Beer their 21-6 star of a five-strong home clean sweep and Adam Jones a 21-6 best in Wellington.

Saturday action

Shropshire bowlers, young and older, will aim to star on greens in the county and on the Fylde coast tomorrow.

The headline acts are the £4,400 Blackpool Masters at Marton Institute and day one of the Autumn Waterloo finals at Fleetwood, where this year’s County Merit winner Rich Goddard goes sole in the last 64 rated a 25/1 shot.

Just down the road three of his Castlefields team-mates – Callum Wraight, Ash Wellings and Jon Palmer – are in the star-studded 32-strong Masters field along with Jay Salisbury (Woore).

Back in the county, the Mid Shropshire League has its Junior Handicap and under-18 presentation function at Bridgnorth from 10am.

And it’s the same start time for North Shropshire’s under-15, 18 and 25 Merits and Junior Doubles at Malpas Farmers, to be followed at 12 noon by the Challenge Cup for bowlers from lower division sides in the Whitchurch and Market Drayton evening leagues.
