Lilleshall bowls champions crowned
All the latest action from across the county’s bowling greens.
Finals weekend actually ran over five days as Lilleshall Hall’s flat green bowlers contested the club’s competition titles.

And five was the number of finals that Peter Hancock had reached at the end of a super season on the green in the grounds of the National Sports Centre near Newport.
“The weather interfered, again but not as bad as last year!” said club secretary Liz Caird as she explained the five days of finals.
They started with the Mike Caird Cup which Peter Hancock won by beating Colin Meadows two sets to nil, but next day he lost in the final of the Nuway Cup to Mark Hussell 21-16.
Meadows beat Rod Payne 21-11 to take the Cyril Davies Cup as only two of the four scheduled matches on Saturday were played due to wet conditions.
Sunday’s finals saw Hussell beat Clive Walmsley 21-5 in the QRS Cup showpiece, Hancock again defeated Meadows 21-14 to land the Roy Warburton Cup but then he and wife Theresa Hanock were beaten 19-14 in the Pairs Shield final by another married duo in Rod & Sheila Payne.
However, the Hancocks soon recovered and on the Tuesday Peter added the Tarmac Cup with a 21-12 victory over Mike Bradburn, to make it three titles, while Theresa took the Frank Richards Cup with a 21-13 success against Sheila Payne.
Oswestry Bowling League
Llangynog A have denied Johnstown a league and cup double in the Oswestry Bowling League’s veterans set-up.
Runners-up to them in division one, Llangynog beat the champions in the final of the Peter Kendall Shield on Monday at Corwen.
Clive Little was their 21-7 star as they won two singles and one of the doubles to secure an eight shot success, 95-87.
At the same time Mid Shropshire were winning the annual senior citizens match against Shrewsbury for the Alf Dixon Cup, the match at Old Shrewsbury ending with six winners apiece but the Telford bowlers wining by 17 chalks with Ian Evans their 21-8 best.
Premier League deadline
Ambitious Shropshire bowls clubs eager to join the county’s top league have until September 20 to apply.
That’s the deadline set by Premier League officers for winners of Shropshire leagues who want to have a crack at the 12-a-side play-offs, with bottom club Bylet waiting for them in the final on Friday, October 2.
“Any team wishing to join the league must let Martin Gaut (07964 294466) or Rob Burroughs (07901 229623) know if they wish to do so by the end of Sunday, September 20 - providing they have won their respective first division league and fulfil the other criteria,” said a Premier spokesman.
Potential applicants are Sinclair (Mid Shropshire), Bridgewater (Market Drayton) and Chirk AAA (Oswestry).
Entries in the Premier Merit were slightly down this year and the last qualifying sessions will be held on Wednesday, September 16, to produce a last eight for finals night on Friday, September 25.
