The yellow card mix-up and which Wolves players are close to a suspension

Three Wolves players have a tightrope to walk in the next eight games if they want to avoid a Premier League suspension.

Any player that picks up 10 yellow cards up to and including the 32nd top flight fixture will be slapped with a two-match suspension - and Yerson Mosquera, Andre and Joao Gomes are all closing in on it.

But some confusion over Mosquera's yellow cards has led to Wolves seeking confirmation from the FA this week.

For anyone watching the defeat to Bournemouth last time out, it looked clear as day that Mosquera was booked in the second half, as he reacted with dramatic shock at giving away a foul.

It seemed so clear, that the Premier League's own website, alongside some statistics groups, have Mosquera down for nine yellow cards this season.

It was not until Rob Edwards' pre-Chelsea press conference on Friday, following a question about the players getting close to a ban, that Wolves realised the confusion.

Their disciplinary team have Mosquera down for eight yellow cards and that immediately led them to clarify the situation. A call to the FA, and reference to the referee's post-Bournemouth match report, revealed that Mosquera had indeed not been booking against the Cherries.

So in fact, the defender is on eight yellow cards this season and he joins Andre and J.Gomes in having to avoid two more in the next eight games, or he will receive a two-match ban.

Edwards seemed unfazed by the fact that they could be banned and only called on them to avoid 'silly bookings'.

"It's really hard to take away from what they are," he said on the trio.

"They're emotive characters, they play a little bit on the edge as well and that's what brings out the best in them.

"Of course, I don't want silly bookings. I don't want them for kicking the ball away or for going at the ref or anything like that.

"But if it's in a tackle and it's an honest one, then you have to hold your hands up and that's just the game. There'll be other players in the league that'll be in the same situation at the moment as well.

"We do have a few characters that play on the edge a little bit and it's hard once they're in the heat of the battle.

"No matter how much I'm there on the side going, 'calm down', it can be challenging to affect that at the time."

There is some hope, however, as a few seasons ago Ruben Neves managed to avoid a yellow card for eight straight games to dodge a ban for Wolves.

On the other hand, Mosquera has accrued his eight bookings in his last 12 games after becoming a regular starter under Edwards.

The Colombian plays with intense aggression and has an old school style in the way he goes to battle - a sentiment that Edwards agreed with, but also challenged in equal measure.

He said: "I think that's true, but then there's other things that he does that make him a real modern player as well.

"Some of his athleticism, some of the passing and running or the overlaps or the counter-attacks that he can put us on with his speed and his athleticism is pretty incredible.

"But he does like to make things quite personal in duels, which I do like, and certainly that's quite old school."
