Shropshire town council's new TikTok account banned 'for no reason', meeting told
Councillors agreed to a trial last month
A Telford town council's bid to modernise has hit an immediate snag after its newly launched TikTok account was banned.
Councillors had agreed at a meeting in June to trial a Wellington Town Council account on the popular social media video site.
But in an update this week a committee heard that the bid to engage with the younger population has hit a problem.
Its account has been banned, the events and communication committee heard.
Officials have been left scratching their heads after being given "no reason" for the prohibition, the meeting heard on Tuesday (July 28).
The council has lodged an appeal and is waiting to hear back from the social media giant.
Councillor Paul Davis said he hopes the ban is overturned.
Committee chair Emma Holding added that she wants to understand why the account was banned and to avoid the same happening again.
Councillors suggested Mayor Reg Snell "write a letter" to the ByteDance-owned company to ask it to lift the ban.
TikTok, which lets users create, share, and watch short videos, has been approached for comment.
