George Lloyd update as boss reveals Shrewsbury Town striker ‘seized up’
Lloyd scored on his return to the Shrewsbury Town starting XI.
Shrewsbury Town boss Gavin Cowan provided an update on George Lloyd after the striker returned from a neck injury against Gillingham.
Lloyd’s availability had been in doubt after he was stretchered off and taken to hospital following a concerning injury during Shrewsbury’s draw at Rotherham United a week earlier.
But the 26-year-old returned to the starting XI against the Gills and scored from the penalty spot before being substituted just after the hour mark to applause from supporters.

After the match, Cowan explained that Lloyd had ‘seized up’ during the second half.
He said: “The injury is a whiplash thing. So, we’ve been monitoring him all week. We wouldn't have played him today if it wasn’t 100 per cent. He was ready to go.
“But at the moment he scored the penalty, I think even in the celebration, he might have seized up. So, in the end, he has to come off. It is what it is.”
Before kick-off, Cowan praised Shrewsbury’s medical team for their work in helping Lloyd recover and return to contention for the weekend.
The Town boss admitted the striker would be ‘dosing up’ for the game, adding that “trying to hold him back was a task too big”.
