Drivers were being warned to expect hazardous driving conditions across Shropshire tonight as it was revealed the UK had experienced its coldest start to winter for more than 30 years.

The first third of December was more nippy than usual nationwide, with the average temperature just 1.7C (35.06F), according to the Met Office.

That was a marked drop on the long-term average of 4.7C (40.46F), suggesting the season could buck the trend for very mild winters.

Such a cold start to the month has not been seen since the 1970s, a spokesman said.

Shropshire Star weatherman John Warner said that it was strangely mild, with temperatures hitting 9C (48F) during the night whereas the thermometer only scraped up to 6C during the day yesterday.

Mr Warner added: "We are in for a mixed bag tonight.

"It will be quite misty, with freezing fog patches so it could be pretty hazardous on the roads."

He predicted tomorrow would be mostly cloudy, with occasional rain showers.
